A discussion with one of my closest friends led me to this great article about the how we view spiritual growth. In the Australian outback there is a different approach to ranching than we are used to in many other parts of the world. There are not any fences. The local ranchers have found that "there is no need to fence in the cattle when they are highly motivated to stay within range of their source of life."
In the church, do we find ourselves more focused on building higher fences instead of deeper wells? I believe that one of the main problems that we can face when building fences is that people become more worried about being "in" or "out" than they are about getting as close as they can to their "source of life".
Philippians 3:10-12
10I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. 12Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.
Today, I don't want my life to be measured simply by whether or not I am within the "boundaries" of the fence, but instead by how close I am getting to the Well of Living Water, Jesus Christ.
