Ebony's Hope

on Thursday, September 25, 2008

Today, I traveled to Scranton, PA for the funeral of Ebony Young. Last year, when we were 2 days from starting The Well Young Adults Ministry, I received a call from our drummer who was on his way home. He told me about his sister Ebony who had just been diagnosed with some rare type of cancer. The doctors believed there were only weeks left in her life.

Ebony went to be with the Lord almost exactly a year later on September 22nd, 2008. As I slipped into the back of the crowded sanctuary of Green Ridge Assembly of God in Scranton, PA for the service, I was overwhelmed by the number of testimonies from pastors and others that were so deeply impacted by Ebony's life. Stories about Ebony spending her last days encouraging others to continue strong after the Lord showed that she truly had a perspective that was out of this world. Ebony is gazing into eternity where she now stands in the presence of Jesus, the one she lived her life for here on Earth.

At the end of the service there was a song played that was written as a tribute to Ebony. It's called "Ebony's Hope". The lyrics are below.

"Ebony's Hope" by Steve Santos

When the hands of men have failed again
Hope is lost inside their best laid plans
You'll see there Ebony's Hope

And then you will find that life is not
always black and white.

Sky is blue and the trees are great
Your love was red that's all she needs
Whoa that's Ebony's hope
No man decides to keep or take
The life of one whose soul's been saved
Whoa that's Ebony's hope

And when answers are talked around
And her sleep is not easily found
Then lives on Ebony's hope

But more than all that's seen
She knows someday she'll dance free
That's Ebony's hope
