Weekend Wrapup

on Monday, October 6, 2008

This week we got into part 4 of our "You Are Here" series at The Well. The goal of the night was to give us a new perspective on community. Our hope was to see that community is not an "extra add-on" to our church experience, IT IS THE CHURCH. We took a look at Genesis 26 and we saw the story of God blessing Isaac and how the Philestines became jealous and filled in all of the wells that Abraham had dug.

I know that as you read this passage it may look as innocent as a bully coming and putting dirt in your coffee, but this went much beyond that. It was an attach on the community of the people of God. Wells have always been seen as a place of life. What these enemies were attempting to do was destroy the places of life throughout the land. As those wells were filled in, naturally as a result the people of those areas had to disperse and go their own way to find water for thier crops, flocks and families.

How often does this happen today. God's people become isolated and community can be destroyed in the body of Christ. The most natural response for many people who are hurting to stay away from community. They isolate themselves in an attempt to cope and work through the "issues" that are plaguing them. The church is for the hurting, not the perfect, the plagued, not the invincible. There is such a power when God's people get together in community: God honoring community; and truly carry one anothers burdens.

We got to hear from one of our young adults, DJ who shared the powerful story of how he was healed by God through community. We ended the night together with a new kind of campaign. WE WANT TO DIG WELLS IN OUR COMMUNITIES! We want to establish places of life and just as Isaac went on to do; re-establish the community that the enemy has so long tried to take away from God's people.

We have started a network of "well communities" through the different towns and neighborhoods in our area. A Well Community exists as a place of life where people can gather to celebrate God, culture and friendships and in so doing draw others who are far and thirsty for living water close to the source of eternal life.

Really excited about all that God has in store for us as we live our lives to get get closer to Him and bring others into relationship with Him!
